Marietta's Biography
Marietta Carter-Narcisse, celebrity makeup artist and internationally renowned educator, has a passion for sharing beauty that’s apparent in everything she does -- whether she’s standing with a color palette in hand, brush poised before a famous face ready to be made up; or lecturing before a classroom, training a whole new generation of makeup artists.
And with her newly launched line of handmade beauty and skin care products, the woman often referred to in industry circles as the “makeup evangelist” has found yet another way to share her extensive knowledge of the craft.
Her natural handmade body products, offered at Marietta’s Chattel House, is a marriage of Carter-Narcisse’s experience as a motion picture makeup artist with her background in chemistry. And it is all inspired by a fascination with herbs and flowers that began when she was growing up in Barbados, watching her mother use plants from their own backyard to concoct medicinal teas.
Launched summer 2001, her products has already gotten the attention of people, press and beauty professionals around the globe. In Style magazine named the products (formerly Calypso Cosmetics) in its spring “best of” beauty issue, Lucky, In Style UK and Cosmopolitan Japan; so have trade magazines such as Soap and Cosmetics and Makeup Artist Magazine.
Carter-Narcisse’s career in the fashion and beauty industry began in the early ‘70s when she moved from Barbados to Brooklyn, New York. By 19, she was instructing and designing complete looks for her clients. An honor roll student at G.W. Wingate High School, she earned a scholarship to attend Long Island University, where she received her BA degree in psychology and chemistry.
Her career in the entertainment industry began as an assistant wardrobe stylist to her younger brother during the Commodores’ 1983 European Tour. Through her brother, she met and toured with Natalie Cole as her image consultant. This led to a string of hit music videos, commercials, television shows and a successful career as one of the most sought-after makeup artists in motion pictures. Her film credits include: Baby Boy, The Negotiator, The Red Violin, Sphere, Eve’s Bayou, The Long Kiss Goodnight, A Time to Kill, Strange Days, Tina: What’s Love Got to Do With It?, Malcolm X, Boyz ‘N The Hood, Ghost, and numerous others.
This former agency head is also a seasoned educator. Carter-Narcisse has lectured before Procter and Gamble, the Society of Cosmetic Chemists, and for numerous schools and associations. In 1999 she began “Workshops by Marietta,” offering instruction on beauty to both the professional and aspiring artist.
Also considered a respected expert in her field, Carter-Narcisse has been interviewed by and written for such publications as Vogue, Glamour, Premiere, Seventeen, Vogue Hollywood, Panache, Shades of Beauty, First Hold, Makeup Artist Magazine and Essence, among others.
Carter-Narcisse currently resides in Davie, Florida with her husband and son.
